Lonely! Locked Up!  And Orphan!

What better way to give this Christmas than to donate to the SPCA.  It may save an animals life, or find them a new home where they can be loved and looked after.  There are so many animals that are taken to the SPCA on a daily basis all over the world and they need your support.  To provide shelter and food over this Christmas season wouldn’t that make you feel like you have been a little part of an amazing organization.

Just recently the SPCA had an article about a dog called Ollie who was found on the side of a desert road in the United States.  A couple were driving the road which was not at all well used and saw Ollie he looked like skin and bone.  They immediately put him in their car out of the scorching sun and called for help.  A dedicated organization in Phoenix rushed him to a veterinarian and they found the only way he had survived was from eating dirt and weeds and getting what little moisture there is in the desert from cactus.  Thanks to the kind people who found him Ollie is now doing fine and is looking forward to a foster home until he is ready for adoption.

Do You Know How to Use a Slicker Brush on your Pet?

Smaller slicker brushes are used for around the toes, legs, face, and tail. Larger slicker brushes are perfect for the rest of the body.

Begin brushing your dog’s back close to the base of the tail.

Going with the grain of your dog’s hair, use a scooping motion to brush each portion of hair. Your whole arm should remain relatively stationary while your forearm turns 90 degrees. The curved end of the bristles should be pointing back toward his tail.

Work your way up toward the neck. Put down the large slicker brush when you have brushed all of the flat areas of your dog’s body.

Using a smaller slicker brush, use the same techniques to brush the more curvacious areas of your dog: tail, legs, toes, and neck area. The face should not require much, if any, brushing.

Use a metal comb to clean out the hair that you have collected, whenever necessary.

WHY DO CATS EAT GRASS

Some cat owners make the mistake of preventing their cat from eating grass. There are various reasons for this, one being that they think it makes their cat ill or upsets their stomach. This is an incorrect assumption and in fact the eating of grass followed by regurgitation is a perfectly natural behavior for all cats.

Cats do not possess the ability to separate meat from fur bones or feathers before eating like we do so they have to eat the digestible parts along with the indigestible parts. When the cat has finished digesting what he can the rest has to be removed from the system. To try and pass this through the digestive tract could cause obstruction and severe illness so this is where grass eating comes in.

The habit of eating grass triggers the natural process of regurgitation of indigestible foods including its own fur balls which would otherwise obstruct the system. This can appear to us humans as if the cat is being violently ill but this is not the case and in fact is very beneficial to the cat.

What about other plants and vegetables?

Cats cannot produce the enzymes needed to break down plant matter. Even when pureed or powdered, vegetables simply pass through the digestive tract without leaving any of their nutritional content. This alone is not harmful to your cat, but when undigested plant matter mixes with highly digestible food such as meat, indigestion and other complications may occur. Grass is an exception however; some cats compulsively eat grass when you leave them outdoors. This will cause them to regurgitate the indigestible matter, including raw vegetables.

If your cat is unable to get access to grass he may attempt to eat your house plants instead. This could be dangerous because some house plants and flowers are toxic to cats, so if you have a house cat like a Ragdoll cat for example you should provide a regular supply of potted grass to prevent him looking elsewhere. And most importantly do not punish your cat for regurgitating on to you carpet because he will not know why you are punishing him. Regurgitation is an involuntary action of your cat’s stomach so he could not stop it happening even if he tried. Cleaning up after the occasional regurgitation should be an accepted part of being a loving cat owner as they are only doing what comes naturally.

Christmas Pet Safety

• Don’t change your dogs schedule just because yours is changing. Try to feed and exercise your dog at its regular times. Developing a special routine for your dog during holiday parties such as providing a special treat in a special room of your house works well.

• Put your dog away before your guests arrive. To prevent  it from escaping or worse yet “soiling” your guest’s clothes with an unwanted jump.

• All those Christmas delights are great for us but ca be fatal to pooches. Put packages, snacks and food out of reach! Dogs who smell food (even in a package) will rip it open. Food is the number one holiday hazard for dogs. Put away children’s toys after they are opened. Ingested toys can cause choking and may have to be removed through surgery.

• Tell guests not to share Christmas treats with your pet. Poultry skin, fat trimmings, rich gravies, and buttery sauces can cause severe vomiting, diarrhea, or even worse, a life threatening inflammation of the pancreas. Also, remember that an ounce of alcoholic beverage can put a small dog into a coma.

• Stow chocolate candy or baking ingredients out of reach. Chocolate is the most common toxicity treat during the holidays. Small amounts cause problems. Larger amounts can cause above normal heart rhythms, nervous system malfunctions, and even death.

• Secure your garbage in bins with tight lids. (This is a good habit to get into all year!) A dog can chew up holiday garbage, which can result in intestinal problems.

• Buy only non-toxic.decorating products (tree water preservatives and artificial snow)

• Secure large trees to the wall to prevent tipping, or consider a smaller tree that can fit on a tabletop.

• Remember that stomach problems can be caused by popcorn and gumdrops. Avoid using these strings of edible decorations.

• Fasten all your tree decorations securely, with the more fragile ones at the top. Dogs who chew these can suffer cuts in their mouth from broken ornaments.

• Don’t leave wrapping paper and materials lying around.

• Place holiday plants out of reach and vacuum often. Poinsettia can cause drooling, oral pain, and vomiting. Mistletoe causes vomiting, labored breathing, shock, and death from cardiovascular collapse. When animals eat the needles from real or fake trees, they can also get intestinal blockage.

• Display candles on high shelves to avoid painful burns and singed Whiskers and make sure that cords are tucked out of reach. Electrocution can put a huge damper on Holiday festivities.

A MESSAGE FROM SANTA

Christmas can be a sad time for those lost and unwanted pets that end up in rescue centres and SPCA.  Please if you are thinking of a new puppy this Christmas make sure you follow the Golden rules

• Research the breed of your choice; what are it’s good and bad points?
• Always see the puppies with their mother.
• Ensure that the puppy is at least 7 weeks of age.
• Ensure the puppies have been socialised by the breeder.
• Make sure the puppies do not have parasites, such as ear mites, worms or fleas.
• Always take the puppy to your chosen veterinary surgery shortly after you buy the puppy, so they can give it a health check.
• The breeder should tell you what brand of dog food (or what feeding regime they have been using) for the puppies.
• Be prepared for a large change in your household routine, as house training a puppy is not always easy and he o
• When you leave the puppy alone, do so for short periods of time to start with, so he learns that you go away but you come back.
